Many homes built during the forties through the seventies had the walls covered with some kind of texture in the plaster or drywall.
Over time; and with the changing of tastes and trends, they have become rather unattractive and are usually uneven and cracked.
Do not despair! There are ways of resurfacing these walls and ceilings mostly dust-free! No demolition involved. I have done this countless times by plastering methods and with thin drywall laminated over the existing.True, even, and flat, free of defect.........

Several of the rooms shown originally had an ugly, nearly two-inch thick coating of nasty old stipple texture. I replastered right over the existing while giving it some structural advantage with fasteners and English keene's cement plaster, a very hard substance. Lasts forever...
